Sharp Eyes and a Gentle Presence

Hootsie smiles from a chairlift ride, wearing sunglasses and a Boise State sweatshirt, with rolling hills, trees, and a bright summer sky behind her.
Sharp eyes, a warm smile, and always ready to come along for the adventure.

I worked on Gail’s team for several years, and long after that working relationship ended, the friendship remained. Over the years, I had several opportunities to spend time with her mom, Hootsie, and every encounter left an impression. She had a beautiful smile and incredibly intelligent eyes, but don’t let that fool you into thinking she missed anything. She was sharp as a whip. I can only imagine some of the observations she quietly shared with Gail — comments muttered just softly enough that they were meant only for her daughter to hear. I knew she was sweet. Her eyes gave that away immediately. But most of what I came to understand about her came from simply being around her and watching the relationship she and Gail shared. Hootsie was discreet, observant, and sharp to the core. We were blessed by her presence, and I’m thankful Gail encouraged her to come along with us from time to time — although, honestly, who was really tagging along with whom? Sometimes it felt more like the rest of us were simply fortunate enough to be included in Hootsie’s orbit. Watching Gail care for her mother taught me something about love that I don’t think I fully understood before. Hootsie never wanted for anything. Gail made sure every need was met with devotion, patience, and care. That kind of love leaves an impression on the people who witness it. Gail, I suspect learning to move through daily life without your mom physically beside you will bring challenges you may not expect. But Cait, the rest of your friends, and I will always be here for you. Look for the sunshine in every day. Some days may appear overcast, but sometimes that’s just God’s way of reminding us to keep looking for the light. It’s there every day if we remain open to seeing it. — Alberto S. Llanes
