The Mess Before the Mission

Sometimes the most chaotic seasons come right before the most meaningful ones. What if the mess you’re in isn’t failure—but preparation?

The Mess Before the Mission
The mess might not be the problem. It might be the preparation.

There are seasons when my life feels like one big “before” picture.

The desk is piled high.
My planner is overbooked.
The laundry is three loads behind (including the one that’s been washed three times and might be heading for a fourth).

And my brain?
Juggling so many thoughts that not one of them feels complete.

And yet—I’ve noticed something over the years.

Some of my greatest seasons of impact have come right after the messiest chapters of my life.

Not because the chaos was enjoyable.
Not because I’d choose to repeat it.

But because it often becomes the soil where God plants the seeds of what’s next.

Biblical Glimpses of “Mess Before Mission”

Moses was tending sheep in the desert—after running from his past—when God called him to lead.

Gideon was hiding, threshing wheat in fear, when God called him a “mighty warrior.”

The disciples were in the middle of ordinary, messy lives when Jesus called them into something world-changing.

The pattern?

God doesn’t wait for a polished, put-together season.

He meets us in the middle of the mess…
and calls us forward from there.

What the Mess Teaches Me

Looking back, I can see at least three things God does in these seasons:

1. It Strips Away the Illusion of Control

When I can’t juggle it all, I’m reminded I was never meant to.

The mission ahead will require His strength—not mine.

2. It Reveals What Actually Matters

Chaos has a way of clarifying priorities.

When time, energy, and focus are limited, the essentials rise to the surface.

3. It Prepares Me for Flexibility

Calling—whether in business, ministry, caregiving, or life—rarely follows a clean plan.

Mess teaches me to adapt without losing direction.

If You’re in the Mess Right Now

I won’t pretend it’s easy.

It’s exhausting.
Frustrating.
And sometimes isolating.

But you’re not behind.

You’re in a “before” season.

Scripture is full of them—and none of them are wasted.

What feels like delay…
may actually be preparation.

What feels overwhelming today…
may be shaping what you’ll carry tomorrow.

Practical Takeaways

• Pause and ask: “God, what do You want me to see in this season?”
• Identify your top 3 priorities—and protect them
• Give yourself permission to release what doesn’t matter right now

A Moment with God

Lord, thank You for meeting me in the mess.

Help me trust that even this season has purpose in Your hands.
Show me what You’re shaping in me, even when I can’t see it clearly.

And when it’s time to step forward, give me the courage to follow.

Amen.
